NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team came out of Ingalls Rink on Saturday night with a point, as the Engineers tied the Yale Bulldogs 1-1 through overtime but fell in a shootout 1-0. The tie marks RPI's first game in league play this season that they earned a draw.
Freshman
Tyler Hotson scored RPI's lone goal at the 7:41 mark of the first period, shoving home a puck from in close off a pass from
Jake Gagnon that came from behind the net. The goal stood strong through both the first and second intermissions.
Early in the third period, Yale found their equalizer as William Dineen found the twine for the Bulldogs to even the score at 1-1. David Andreychuk and Ian Carpentier each assisted the play, a similar finish to the Gagnon-Hotson goal for RPI in the first.
Things remained even through regulation and overtime, with RPI goaltender
Jack Watson making some highlight saves to keep the Bulldogs at bay. However, in the shootout, Yale tallied the go-ahead score in the fourth round of attempts before the Engineers were shut down.
Watson finished with 30 saves, while Jack Stark ended with 20 saves in net for Yale.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. when they return home to Houston Field House to take on Cornell to kick off Hockey Alumni Weekend before hosting the 46
th Annual Big Red Freakout on Saturday.
