HAMDEN, CT - The 2023-24 season came to an end for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team on Saturday night, as they battled with the No. 7 nationally-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats to a 2-2 tie through two periods before falling 5-2 in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals. With the loss, RPI ends their season 10-23-4 overall while Quinnipiac improves to 26-8-2 and advances to the semifinal round in Lake Placid, N.Y.
After a scoreless opening period, the second period nearly went scoreless before Quinnipiac opened the scoring at the 15:24 mark of the second period. Andon Cerbone scored for the Bobcats before teammate Anthony Cipollone added a score 59 seconds later at the 16:23 mark to make it 2-0 Bobcats.
Before the end of the period, RPI fought back and tied the score at 2-2 heading into the third period. Defenseman
Lauri Sertti netted a goal for the Engineers 18 seconds after the Bobcats' second goal, making it a 2-1 score. Sertti collected the puck at the blue line on a pass from
Tyler Hotson, and let a wrist shot fly from the left wing side of the ice that beat Quinnipiac goaltender Vinny Duplessis.
As time ticked down, the Engineers went on the penalty kill but still found a way to score. Killing off a penalty, a puck was sent out and sophomore
Sutter Muzzatti ran it down. He won the race to the puck, bodied up his defender, and scored on a deke to his forehand to tie the game at 2-2 at the 18:21 mark. Muzzatti's tally set the score heading into the third period.
It was a battle in the third until Quinnipiac found the game-winning goal at the 9:13 mark on the power play, as Cerbone scored his second of the game to give QUinnipiac a 3-2 lead. The Bobcats added two empty net goals late, giving Quinnipiac the 5-2 outcome.
Duplessis finished with 23 saves, while RPI's
Jack Watson made 27 saves on the game.
