TROY, N.Y. - The No. 5 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team took down another ranked opponent on Wednesday evening, as they defeated the No. 20 Williams Eephs by a final score of 16-8 at ECAV Stadium. With the win, RPI improves to a perfect 9-0 on the season.
RPI opened the game strong, scoring a pair of goals in the opening minute courtesy of
Zach Swanson and
Angelo Venuto. In all, RPI led 4-1 after Swanson scored his second at the 8:35 mark of the opening frame.Â
Williams then made a move back, scoring four unanswered goals to claim a 5-4 lead early in the second quarter. From that point, it was all Engineers as
Caleb Oswari kicked off a 13-1 run that lasted late into the fourth quarter, as he scored to tie the game at 5-5 at the 11:17 mark of the second quarter.Â
RPI pushed the offense into the fourth quarter, growing their lead to double-digits as
Jack Morad scored the book end to make the score 16-6 with 2:49 to play. RPI surrendered a pair before the final horn, but held on for the win.
Swanson and
Luke Murphy each finished with five points apiece, each scoring three goals and dishing two assists.
Sean Smith and
Erik Ojert also had three point evenings. Goaltender
Joseph Perry made 11 saves in the win for the Engineers.
The Engineers return to action this Saturday, March 23 when they square off with No. 2 RIT at ECAV Stadium in a top-five Division III matchup.
