ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team ended their weekend strong, completing a three-game sweep over the Bard College Raptors with a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers completed each game in seven innings due to the league's 10-run rule, topping Bard 14-4 and 16-5.
Game 1
Junior
Julian Scarpa continued his strong play on the weekend, backing up his two-homer game on Friday with a 4-for-5 effort in the first game Saturday. Scarpa collected two doubles, a triple, and his third home run of the weekend.
Scarpa capped a three-run first inning for the Engineers with the first double, going up 3-0 in the top of the first. Bard scored one run apiece in the first and second innings before Scarpa homered in the top of the third – a solo shot – to make it 4-2 RPI.
Bard responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, as a pair of RBI singles evened the score at 4-4. Things stayed even until the top of the seventh inning, when RPI turned in a 10 run inning.
Scarpa book-ended the inning, driving in the first runs with a double to left center before going back-to-back with
Martin Marintchev at the end of the inning with each of them collecting triples as RPI took a 14-4 lead.
Andrew Gaughan pitched the final three innings to earn the win, holding Bard down in the seventh to finish off the front end of the doubleheader.
Game 2
Both sides traded runs in the first inning in game two for a 1-1 score, where it stayed until the fifth inning. Scarpa answered the call once again, knocking a two run double to left field to give RPI a 3-1 lead.
After Bard scored in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2, RPI created room thanks to a four-run sixth highlighted by RBI doubles from
Aidan Hicks and
Jon Primerano to make it 7-2. Bard added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to push the score to 7-3.
In the top of the seventh, the Engineers exploded in that frame once again putting up a nine-run inning that saw four RBI singles and a pair of bases loaded walks to aid them to a 16-3 lead.
Despite another pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Cooper Hay and
Jack Ellis combined to finish off Bard to hang on for the win.
The Engineers return to action on Friday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m. in Schenectady when they take on Union College in Liberty League play.
