Engineers Continue Unbeaten Streak Saturday

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team continued their unbeaten streak on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated the Oneonta Red Dragons in a doubleheader by final scores of 6-2 and 10-4.

Game 1
RPI wasted no time scoring their first run, as Evann McDowell doubled as the second batter of the game to score Erin Askins – who led off reaching base – to make it 1-0 Engineers.

After Oneonta evened the score in the bottom of the first, Catherine Worthington answered with a two-run home run in the top of the second to put RPI back on top, 3-1.

It was all RPI from that point, as the Engineers extended their lead to 6-1 with runs in the fourth and fifth innings – highlighted by an RBI single in the fourth from freshman Ryleigh Falvey.

Despite giving up an RB double in the sixth inning, Brooke Sroczinski held down the fort in the circle to collect the complete game win, going all seven innings giving up five hits, walking one, and striking out six.

Game 2
RPI struck in the first inning once again, as the Engineers were able to load the bases. Alex Ledger was the beneficiary, knocking an RBI double through the right side of the infield to score all three runs to take a 3-0 lead.

Oneonta scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2 before Ledger struck again in the top of the second. This time, another at-bat with the bases loaded produced an RBI single up the middle, scoring two and pushing the Engineers lead to 5-2.

Askins added to the lead in the top of the third with an RBI double, making it 7-2 RPI before Oneonta clawed back close with a run in the bottom of the third and in the fifth to make it 7-4.

Liv Vizzini collected the knockout blow in the top of the sixth inning, smacking a two-run home run to extend the RPI lead to 9-4 before Askins added another RBI knock – a single to score Sydney Speanburg to make it 10-4.

Alexis Cooke pitched five innings, giving up just three earned runs in earning another win on the season. Freshman Ava Markert finished off the game, pitching the final two innings not allowing a run, hit, or walk in facing the minimum six batters.

RPI returns to action on Wednesday, April 3 when they play host to Utica in Troy starting at 3 p.m.
