No. 18 Engineers Split Liberty League Doubleheader at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team suffered its first setback of the spring today, as the Engineers split an afternoon double at Union.

RPI claimed a 11-0 five-inning victory in the opener before coming up short 4-3 against the Garnet Chargers in game two.

Five different Engineers tallied two hits in game one, with Erin Askins, Callista Adorno, Alex Ledger, and Liv Vizzini each recording multi-hit performances for RPI.

Maddy Brooks provided a game-high three RBI, while Alex Ledger drove in two runs. Askins, Adorno, Vizzini, and Sydney Speanburg logged one RBI apiece as well.

Brooke Sroczinski improved to 8-0 in the circle this season after allowing just two base runners in 5.0 innings. Sroczinski struck out five Union batters.

RPI got the scoring started early in game one, with Adorno singling home Askins before Ledger deposited a two-run home run out to left center field.

After the Engineers loaded the bases in the fourth, Speanburg grounded out to bring in Gabby Comeau, Brooks flied out to allow Cat Worthington to come home, and Askins drove in Worthington with a single.

The Engineers cleared the eight-run mark in the fifth thanks to a RBI single by Vizzini and a two-run single by Brooks. Adorno, Ledger, Vizzini, and Comeau all crossed home for runs in the final frame.

Ledger kept it rolling with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate in game two. Caroline Peel also matched Ledger with two hits in the finale.

Ledger gave RPI another early advantage with a first-inning single that brought in Askins. After Union got a run back in the bottom of the first, Ryleigh Falvey out the Engineers ahead again in the second, as she plated Worthington with a single to right.

Union scored once in the second and two more times in the third to propel ahead 4-2. A sacrifice fly by Worthington scored Megan Wampner to cut the deficit to 403, however that would be the closest RPI would reach in game two.

The Engineers will look to regroup with a home series against RIT on Friday afternoon. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 pm at Doris Robison Field.
