POTSDAM, N.Y. - A trio of Engineers collected four point games, as the No. 2 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team took down the Clarkson Golden Knights on the road by a final score of 17-12. With the win, RPI improves to 12-0 on the season thanks to four-point games from
Zach Swanson,
Anthony Mazzella, and
Luke Murphy.
The Golden Knights weren't backing down off the start, pushing RPI into 3-2 deficit with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter. The first 15 minutes finished in a 4-all tie, with each side collecting a goal in the opening five minutes of the second quarter. Mazzella scored to make it 5-4 before Sam Mancabelli made it 5-5 with 11:09 to play.
The Engineers took the lead for good with 9:58 to play in the second quarter, as Swanson scored his first goal of the day to give RPI a 6-5 lead. Swanson's goal began an 8-0 run that was capped by a goal from
Drew Teff that helped them push their lead to 13-5 with 6:56 to play in the 3rd quarter.
RPI continued to score into the fourth quarter, with Nolan Smoth scoring the final goal of the day with 2:34 in regulation to give RPI a 17-9 lead. Clarkson did not quit, as the Golden Knights scored three goal before the final horn to make the 17-12 final score.
Swanson scored four times, while Mazzella and Murphy had a pair of goals and assists each.
Erik Ojert had two goals and an assist, as 13 Engineers came out with at least one point on the afternoon.
Joseph Perry made seven saves in the win.
Andrew Kearney led Clarkson with four goals and an assist, while Tyler Hall added two goal and an assist.Â
RPI returns to action next Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. when they play host to No. 10 Union at ECAV Stadium in Liberty League action.
