TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team defeated RIT 5-1 today to begin the 2024 Liberty League Softball Championship at Doris Robison Field. With the victory, the top-seeded and host Engineers advance to face Rochester, the tournament's two seed, tomorrow at 10:00 am.
Brooke Sroczinski carried a no-hit effort into the seventh inning before she surrendered her first and only base hit of the afternoon to lead off the final stanza. Sroczinski struck out 10 Tigers in her complete-game effort.
Oliva Termi got RPI on the board first with a pinch-hit RBI single that scored
Callista Adorno in the bottom of the fourth. The Engineers did the rest of their scoring in the sixth inning, with
Erin Askins,
Evann McDowell, and
Liv Vizzini all delivering run-scoring hits in the frame.
Askins started the sixth-inning rally with a bases-loaded walk, which was immediately followed by a sacrifice fly by McDowell that allowed Cat Worthington to tag up and score. Vizzini would then blast a double to right field that brought home Askins and
Ryleigh Falvey.
Askins was on base three times in the win, as she tallied a hit and drew two walks. Adorno finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a team-high two runs scored.
