ROCHESTER, NY.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team tied the game in the final seconds before earning a 78-73 overtime win at RIT tonight.
After an Avery Eugster free throw with two seconds remaining tied the action at 68-all, the Engineers blitzed the Tigers for nine of the first 11 points in the extra session to take the road win.
Eugster tallied a team-best 17 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting. He also co-lead the team with eight rebounds and four assists.
Andrew Deppe, Dylan Matchett, and PJ Scalisi were in double-figures as well with 15, 13, and 11 points respectively. Deppe connected on 6-of-8 from the field and Scalisi added eight rebounds and four steals. Chuck Clemons had seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists as well.
The Tigers led by as much as 18 points in the first half, as RIT hit 13 of the its first 21 shots from the floor to build a big lead early. Following the Tigers' hot start, the Engineers would finish the half on a 21-7 sprint to cut the deficit to four at the break.
RPI shot 13-of-26 (50 percent) as a team in a second half that saw the two sides exchange the lead nine times and tie on seven different occasions.
After knocking down the game-tying free throw, Eugster scored six of the RPI's 10 points in OT. The Engineers defense limited RIT to just two made field goals in the overtime.
RPI will look forward to a 2:00 pm Liberty League matchup at Skidmore on Sunday.
