Engineers Opens Regular Season Versus Miami University

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team came out firing in its 2025–26 regular-season opener but was edged 5–3 by Miami University (Ohio)  tonight in Houston Field House. The Engineers built an early two-goal advantage before the RedHawks rallied with four unanswered tallies to escape with the road win.

After conceding a power-play goal just over five minutes into the contest, RPI responded immediately. Kazimier Sobieski evened the score less than a minute later, burying a power-play shot from the right circle off a setup from Luciano Wilson. The Engineers struck again 44 seconds later when Matthew Buckley netted his first collegiate goal, using help from Tyler Wallace and Thomas Klassek to make it 2–1.

Early in the second period, RPI extended its lead as Filip Sitar converted from close range, with Wilson and Sobieski each recording helpers on the play. From there, however, Miami capitalized on special teams and transition chances, scoring twice on the power play and adding the go-ahead goal at 14:21 of the middle frame. The RedHawks tacked on an empty-netter in the closing minutes.

Sobieski led the Engineers with a goal and assist for a team-high two points, while Wilson chipped in two assists and Sitar went 11-for-19 at the faceoff dot to anchor the forward group. Wallace also recorded a helper and won seven of 12 draws.

In net, Bruno Bruveris finished with 23 saves, keeping RPI in the game through several extended Miami power plays. The Engineers also held the edge in faceoffs (33–32) and matched the RedHawks with 29 total shots on goal.

The two squads will close the weekend with a 6:00 pm rematch tomorrow in Houston Field House. Tickets are available at https://rpiathletics.universitytickets.com/.
