GENEVA, N.Y. — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football continued its strong start to Liberty League play with a 36–10 road victory over defending conference champion Hobart this at Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium. The 26-point margin marked the third-largest victory for RPI in a series that dates back to 1910.
The Engineers struck first midway through the opening quarter as
Anthony DeMatteo capped a 10-play, 89-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to
Dalton Grant. Early in the second quarter,
Kayden White powered in from five yards out to extend the lead, and
Aleksandar Maric tacked on three consecutive field goals, good from 38, 28, and 29 yards, to push RPI's advantage to 23–0.
RPI wasted little time adding to its lead in the third quarter when White finished an 87-yard drive with his second rushing touchdown of the day. After Hobart briefly cut into the deficit with a touchdown pass, RPI responded in the fourth quarter as
Adrien Gurung capped a methodical eight-play drive with a three-yard score to put the game out of reach.
White carried 24 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while Gurung added 52 yards and a score on 15 attempts. DeMatteo was efficient through the air, completing 14 of 20 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown without a turnover to help the Engineers tally three straight games scoring 30 or more points for the first time since 2019.
Nine different receivers contributed, led by
Paisley Nickelson's 73 yards on three catches and
Robbie Peterson's 69-yard reception that set up White's second touchdown.
The defense turned in another disruptive performance, forcing three turnovers in addition to stifling Hobart on all eight of its third down attempts.
Owen Boland had six tackles, including a sack and forced fumble, while
Patrick O'Keefe added a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.
Cooper Simmons sealed the win with a fourth-quarter interception, and
Matt Krauza and
Miles Lafferty each tallied six tackles. Special teams also played a role, highlighted by a 35-yard punt return from
Gage Swanger and Maric's perfect 3-for-3 effort on field goals.
Winners of four in a row, RPI will look to maintain momentum with a Saturday date with Buffalo State in ECAV Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:00 pm as part of RPI's Homecoming & Reunion Weekend.
