CANTON, NY — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football extended its Liberty League unbeaten streak and continued its dominant stretch with a 48–0 road victory over St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
The Engineers have now won six straight games, outscoring opponents 223–51 over that span, and remain perfect in league play at 5–0.
RPI's offense set the tone early and never looked back. Quarterback
Anthony DeMatteo led a crisp 58-yard drive on the opening possession, finding
Josh Young for a 22-yard touchdown strike. On the following series,
Kayden White capped another long march with a seven-yard rushing score to make it 14–0 after one quarter.
The Engineers struck again midway through the second when
Adrien Gurung powered in from five yards out, and just before halftime,
Gage Swanger hauled in a 29-yard touchdown pass from DeMatteo to extend the lead to 27–0 at the break.
RPI's balanced attack continued to roll after halftime.
Lex Fondelius opened the third quarter with a one-yard touchdown plunge, and moments later, Swanger delivered a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown, his second punt return score of the year. Josh Ahrens added the finishing touch with a nine-yard touchdown run to close out the scoring.
DeMatteo completed 20 of 23 passes for 270 yards.
Robbie Peterson led the receiving corp with five catches for 55 yards, while
Nate Ehui and
Paisley Nickelson combined for 90 yards on five receptions. Ahrens paced the rushing attack with 45 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, White added 40 yards and a score, and Gurung contributed 20 yards and a touchdown.
The defense turned in another dominant showing, pitching RPI's first shutout of the season while limiting the Saints to just 186 total yards.
Cassius Johnson intercepted a fourth-quarter pass and returned it 26 yards, while
Patrick O'Keefe,
T.J. Chadwick, and
Griffin Kramer each recorded sacks.
Scott Dochat forced a fumble as well.
Matt Krauza,
P.J. Poknis, and Johnson all finished with six tackles as RPI held St. Lawrence to 2-for-14 on third-down conversions.
Next up, the Engineers will return home for the first time in four weeks to host Ithaca on Senior Day next Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 pm in ECAV Stadium.
