DELI, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team sprinted to a 19–2 opening salvo and never trailed, defeating SUNY Delhi 72–55 on this evening at Floyd L. Maines Arena.
Dylan Matchett powered the win with a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Yechiel Stewart added 15 points to go with four assists and a team-best four steals. Pat White supplied 12 points and nine boards as RPI dominated the glass 43–31, piled up 36 points in the paint, and turned defense into 22 fast-break points.
After Delhi notched the game's first basket, the Engineers scored the next 19 points to establish control early. RPI went into halftime up 36–17 after holding the Broncos to 21.4% shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The Engineers owned 15 of the first 19 points in the second half to push their advantage to as much as 30 in the final stanza.
Matchett's led all players in points and rebounds, while Stewart's 15 points came on 5-of-6 shooting. Andrew Deppe logged eight points and PJ Scalisi poured in seven points to go alongside four assists. RPI shot 48.1% from the field and turned 13 Delhi turnovers into 17 points.
RPI improves to 2–0 and returns to action Saturday afternoon, meeting Penn State Altoona at the Michael A. Freilich Classic hosted by SUNY Oneonta.
