TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team fought back from a multi-goal deficit before falling 6–3 to the University of New Hampshire on tonight in Houston Field House.
Kazimier Sobieski tallied a goal and an assist, while
Trevor Russell and
Mathieu Bourgault each added markers as the Engineers erased a two-goal New Hampshire advantage before the visiting Wildcats pulled away late.
New Hampshire struck just over a minute into play, but RPI quickly settled in and drew even midway through the first period when Sobieski buried a power-play one-timer at 10:07.
Luciano Wilson and
Rainers Rullers earned assists on the equalizer.
The Wildcats regained the lead on a power play of their own and added another late in the frame to take a 3–1 edge after 20 minutes.
The Engineers responded in the second period behind strong shifts from
Jagger Tapper,
Thomas Klassek, and Bourgault. At 12:35, Bourgault cut the deficit to 3–2 with his first collegiate goal, converting an opportunity that featured Klassek and Tapper.
Goaltender
Nate Krawchuk, who entered to start the second, was sharp in relief, turning aside all six shots he faced in the period to keep RPI within one.
Momentum carried into the third when Russell jumped into the rush and buried a feed from Tapper and Sobieski at 3:13 to bring the Engineers level at 3–3. However, New Hampshire answered eight minutes later and added two insurance goals, one at even strength and another into the empty net, to secure the win.
RPI concludes its non-conference weekend tomorrow, as the Engineers host another Hockey East foe, UMass Lowell, at 4:00 ppm inside Houston Field House.
