SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team was on the wrong end of 3–1 result with Syracuse today in non-conference play at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse opened the scoring early in the first period, but the Engineers' penalty kill and transition game would allow the Engineers to maintain distance. RPI drew even midway through the second when
Georgia Bailey found the back of the net on a shorthanded rush. After exchanging passes with
Aylah Cioffi and
Kendal Davidson, Bailey finished the play by burying a shot at 3:19, leveling the score at one. The tally marked Bailey's second goal of the season and RPI's second shorthanded strike in the last two weeks.
The Engineers continued to press through the remainder of the frame, outshooting the Orange 14–6 in the second period and generating sustained offensive zone time from
Mia Montanari, who tied Davidson for the team lead with five shots on goal.
In net,
Reese Keating turned aside 32 shots, including 14 in the second period, keeping RPI within one deep into the third. Syracuse regained the lead early in the final frame and later added an empty-net tally in the closing minutes to secure the result.
The Engineers finished 4-for-4 on the penalty kill and generated six power-play shots but were unable to convert with the advantage. Syracuse's goals came from Stella Costabile, Nea Tervonen, and Charlotte Hallett, with goaltender Ava Drabyk stopping 24 shots in the win.
The two sides will travel east to finish the weekend series tomorrow at 4:00 pm in Houston Field House.
