MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team booked its trip to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse championship with an 13-7 win over regional host Wesleyan this afternoon.
Sean Smith and Erik Ojert had six points each for RPI in the victory. Smith scored a career-best five goals to go along with one assist and Ojert netted two tallies in addition to assisting on four other Engineer goals.
RPI scored five of the first six goals to establish an advantage that would never waiver.
Smith accounted for half of RPI's eight first-half goals, while Sean Mullen, Easton Morse, Evan Whatley, and Ojert aided the attack with one strike each.
Tyler Ruffini continued the RPI scoring with a third-period goal before the Engineers shutout Wesleyan by a 4-0 margin in the final quarter.
Leading 9-7; Ojert, Smith, Mullen, and Angelo Venuto all scored in succession to send RPI to another weekend of championship action.
Ruffini and Zach Swanson each finished with two assists. Whatley, Cooper Roman, and JD Townsend provided the help on a goal as well.
Four different Engineers created multiple turnovers, as Ojert, Will McGrath, Robby McDonald, and Jack Greene all registered two CTs.
RPI will next face Salisbury or Dickinson, with a date, time, and location to be announced.
