BALTIMORE, MD - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team walked-off Farmingdale State in the bottom of the ninth in the first game of today's consolation bracket in the NCAA DIII Baseball Championship.
Matt Chotiner notched the game-winning hit for the Engineers, as he sliced a single to left field to plate
Jon Primerano to give RPI the 4-3 victory.
Primerano had been hit by a pitch to start the final inning rally.
Ian Oehlschlaeger was plunked in the next at-bat, allowing
Ayush Krishnappa's sacrifice bunt to put runners on the corners.
Following an intentional walk to
Michael Lebenson to load the bases, Chotiner's walk-off hit advanced the Engineers to another consolation tilt at 6:00 pm tonight.
RPI had done the rest of its scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as four consecutive hits and a Ram's error amounted to three runs for the Engineers.
An
Aidan Hicks double preceded singles by
Jon Primerano, Oehlschlaeger, and Krishnappa in the third, with the latter two hits producing RBI. A throwing error by the Farmingdale State infield on a double-play attempt allowed RPI's third run to cross the plate.
The Engineers led 3-2 until the first pitch of the top of the ninth, when a pinch-hit home run by the Rams deadlocked the action one again.
RPI pitchers
Rylan Wade and
Andrew Gaughan both logged efficient performances on the mound, as the pair combined to allow just six hits after a two-run top of the first inning for Farmingdale State.
RPI will await the loser of the this afternoon's contest between Rutgers-Camden and Johns Hopkins University.
