RPI Falls on the Road at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football was unable to overcome a fast start by Utica as the Engineers dropped a 41–14 decision this evening at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

Quarterback Anthony DeMatteo completed 15 of 27 passes for 165 yards, spreading completions to seven different receivers. Tight end Josh Young led the way with four catches for 65 yards, including a 26-yard grab that set up RPI's second score. Grayson Hunter added two receptions for 40 yards and Paisley Nickelson hauled in three catches.

The Pioneers built a 28–0 halftime lead behind four touchdown passes from quarterback Tyler Szalkowski, who finished the night 27-for-29 for 385 yards and six scores. RPI found its footing in the second half, capitalizing on turnovers and strong runs from Kayden White, who finished with 63 yards on the ground. RPI broke through when White capped a short drive set up by a fumble recovery with a one-yard touchdown plunge. White also finished a six-play, 40-yard march with a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Luke Lavello tallied a team-high 10 tackles, while captain Miles Lafferty added nine stops. Cassius Johnson chipped in eight tackles and Matt Krauza recorded seven. RPI forced two fumbles on the night, with defensive lineman Thomas Mackell recovering both. Ethan Johnson registered the team's lone sack and Arthur Hrycak contributed a blocked extra point attempt as well.

RPI will look to bounce back on Saturday, as SUNY Brockport visits for Troy Community Day in the East Campus Athletic Village.
