Union Rallies for Mayor's Cup Victory

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's ice hockey team received a four-point night from Dovar Tinling, however Union College rallied late and claimed a 5–4 overtime decision in the Capital District Mayor's Cup tonight at MVP Arena.

The Garnet Chargers scored twice with the extra attacker in the final three minutes before netting the sudden-death winner 2:25 into overtime .

RPI opened the scoring early in the first period, capitalizing on the power play at 6:21 when Rainers Rullers finished a net-front sequence off crisp puck movement from Tinling and Ethan Bono to give the Engineers a 1–0 lead.

Union evened the contest early in the second, but the Engineers responded late in the period as Tinling struck unassisted at 18:38, forcing a turnover and snapping home his fourth goal of the season to send RPI into the intermission ahead 2–1.

The Engineers extended the margin just 1:43 into the third period when Lucas Lemieux buried his first goal of the year, finishing a feed from Filip Sitar and Tinling to make it 3–1.

Union cut the deficit in half midway through the frame, but RPI answered again at 17:06 as captain Tyler Wallace converted into an empty net for what appeared to be the decisive tally, pushing the advantage to 4–2.

Union mounted a furious rally with the net empty, scoring twice in a 1:17 span to force overtime. In the extra session, the Dutchmen capitalized on a rush opportunity, ending the game at 2:25.

In goal, freshman Nate Krawchuk turned aside 35 shots, including 11 in the third period and two more in overtime, keeping the Engineers in position throughout the night.

RPI hits the road for its next four contests, beginning with a 7:00 pm tilt at Harvard on Friday.
