GENEVA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team imposed its pace from the start and never let up, running past William Smith 68–50 at Bristol Gym to move to 12–5 overall and 7–3 in the Liberty League.
The Engineers opened with rim attacks from
Sophie Costello and
Siena Smith, plus two early layups by
Niamh Gendron off Costello feeds, to build a 20–14 first-quarter cushion.
RPI's defense then squeezed the Herons in the second, as Costello knifed in twice more, Gendron splashed a right-wing three, and Smith added two paint finishes to send the Engineers to halftime ahead 35–21.
The knockout stretch arrived after the break. Costello buried a top-of-the-arc three to open the third, Gendron followed with a block and a put-back, and
Tyler Hormazabal drilled a transition triple before stripping a pass and racing in for two as the margin swelled past twenty. Smith hammered home the surge with a right-wing three followed by Gendron corner trey that helped the Engineers open a 25-point spread and removed all doubt.
Costello paced a balanced lineup with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting to go with six assists, while Gendron delivered a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double and three steals, owning the lane on both ends.
Smith matched Gendron with 16 points on 7-for-8 (2–3 3PT) and added two assists, Hormazabal chipped in five points and two steals, Blaney provided seven off the bench, and
Brooke Boyle filled the gaps with three points, three rebounds and three steals.
RPI next travels to Skidmore on Friday for a 5:00 pm matchup.
