Women's Basketball Falls to League-Leading Union

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team traded early punches with Union before the visitors' hot shooting proved decisive in a 74–61 result tonight in ECAV Arena.

Sophie Costello led the Engineers with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting, while Niamh Gendron posted 12 points and six rebounds, hitting 3-of-5 from deep. Tyler Hormazabal added eight points, four boards, three assists, and two steals, Brooke Boyle finished with seven points and two steals, and Sydney Blaney supplied eight off the bench.

After a back and forth six-minute stretch to begin the game, Union closed the opening period on a 17–5 push to make it 25–15 after one. The hot shooting from the Garnet Chargers continuing into the second half, allowing the lead to blossom to 18 early in the third, but Costello and Hormazabal combined to score nine straight points to cut the margin to 51-43. Union would finish the third in strong fashion once again though, as the visitors owned 10 of the final 13 points in the frame to push the advantage to double-digits once more.

Hormazabal, Boyle, Blaney, and Molly Libby registered two steals apiece, as the Engineers defense totaled 10 or more steals for the eighth time in 12 games this season.

Union finished 30-of-60 (50 percent) from the floor to stay unbeaten in Liberty League play.

The Engineers will turn around to host Skidmore tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
