Men's Soccer Bests Clarkson on Senior Day

TROY, N.Y. — The RPI men's soccer team used a late game-winner from Sean Davis to earn a 2-1 Liberty League victory over Clarkson this afternoon at ECAV Stadium. Christopher McKinney also scored and added an assist for the Engineers, who improved to 5-5-3 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play.

Clarkson had an opportunity to open the scoring in the 31st minute after being awarded a penalty kick, but Noah Churchill denied Cole Mueller from the spot to keep the contest scoreless. RPI capitalized on a penalty opportunity of its own less than 10 minutes later, as McKinney converted from the spot in the 41st minute to send the Engineers into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Knights increased their pressure after the break, but Churchill continued to hold the visitors off the scoreboard with saves on Matt Gatchell and Lars Stephensson. Clarkson eventually broke through in the 84th minute when Zach Ruthfield found the back of the net to level the contest at 1-1.

RPI needed less than three minutes to answer. Davis, who had entered moments earlier, finished a setup from McKinney and Joshua Jarden in the 87th minute to put the Engineers back in front, 2-1. RPI protected the advantage over the final minutes to secure its third Liberty League victory of the season.

McKinney finished with a goal and an assist, while Davis scored on his lone shot of the afternoon and Jarden added an assist. Churchill played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves, including the first-half penalty stop. Clarkson held a 15-7 advantage in total shots, but the Engineers converted both of their attempts on goal in the victory.
