Box Score TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's ice hockey team earned a hard-fought ECAC Hockey point but fell to #9 Cornell in an overtime shootout tonight inside Houston Field House.
Mathieu Bourgault scored the lone goal for the Engineers, while goaltender
Bruno Bruveris turned in a standout performance with 31 saves through overtime to send the contest beyond 65 minutes.
After a scoreless opening period that featured strong defensive structure and timely penalty killing, RPI broke through midway through the second. At 9:33, Bourgault deflected home an even-strength chance from the slot, converting featuring assists from
Jimmy Goffredo and
Gunnar VanDamme to give RPI the early lead.
Cornell answered in the third period at 7:20, evening the score at 1–1 on an even-strength goal. From there, both teams traded chances down the stretch, with RPI nearly reclaiming the lead when
Gustavs Ozolins rang a shot off the post and
Matthew Buckley generated several net-front looks during late offensive-zone shifts.
Overtime saw continued back-and-forth play, highlighted by quality chances from
Luciano Wilson and
Filip Sitar, but neither side was able to find the decisive goal. The contest moved to a shootout, where Cornell converted twice to secure the extra point.
Bruveris was sharp from start to finish, stopping 31 of 32 shots in regulation and overtime, including several point-blank saves late in the third and during the extra frame.
RPI continues conference play tomorrow night, hosting Colgate at Houston Field House with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m.
