TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's ice hockey team delivered its most complete offensive performance of the season tonight, rolling to a 6–1 home victory over Colgate.
Six different Engineers found the back of the net, while RPI struck for four unanswered goals across the second and third periods to pull away from the Raiders.
RPI set the tone early, opening the scoring just three minutes into the contest when
Matthew Buckley finished an even-strength chance off a crisp setup from
Filip Sitar and
Ian Scherzer.
Colgate briefly answered at midway through the period, however the Engineers reclaimed control less than a minute later on the power play, as
Luciano Wilson buried the eventual game-winning goal, converting a feed from Sitar and Buckley to give RPI a 2–1 lead after one.
The Engineers broke the game open early in the second period with a pair of quick strikes.
Tyler Wallace made it 3–1, finishing a strong shift with helpers from
Alfred Lindberg and
Jagger Tapper, before Scherzer extended the margin just 75 seconds later, snapping home an even-strength goal off assists from
Thomas Klassek and Sitar.
RPI wasted little time adding to the advantage in the third. Just one minute in,
Rainers Rullers capitalized at even strength, finishing a feed from
Dovar Tinling and
Jimmy Goffredo. Lindberg capped the scoring two minutes later, converting from the slot off assists from Goffredo and Wallace to make it 6–1.
Sitar paced the Engineers with a team-high three assists, while Buckley, Wallace, Lindberg, and Scherzer each recorded multi-point nights. Goffredo added two assists, and Tinling chipped in a helper as RPI totaled 12 assists on six goals.
In goal,
Nate Krawchuk earned the win with 22 saves, turning aside nine shots in the opening period as Colgate pushed early.
RPI stays home next weekend to host Dartmouth at 7:00 pm on Friday night.
