CANTON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team clinched the Liberty League regular season championship for the second consecutive season with a 56–48 win over St. Lawrence on Thursday night at Burkman Gymnasium.
Kellen Driscoll and
PJ Scalisi shared team-high scoring honors with 12 points apiece, with Driscoll adding four rebounds and Scalisi pulling down a game-high nine boards.
Yechiel Stewart finished with 10 points and four assists, while
Andrew Deppe contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and two assists as the Engineers improved to 19–5 overall and 15–2 in league play.
RPI seized control early, using back-to-back threes from
Billy Feeks and a fast-break layup by Scalisi to turn a tight opening stretch into an early double-digit advantage. The Engineers continued to pressure defensively, forcing turnovers that led to transition opportunities, and closed the first half on a steady run highlighted by Stewart's free throws and interior finishes to take a 31–22 lead into the break.
St. Lawrence trimmed the margin in the second half behind Adam Dudzinski's inside scoring, eventually pulling even at 48–48 with just over three minutes remaining.
RPI answered immediately as Stewart buried a key three to reclaim the lead, and the Engineers locked would not allow a St. Lawrence point across the final 3-plus minutes.
Deppe and Driscoll controlled the glass in the final minutes, and Scalisi and Driscoll combined to go 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the closing 16 seconds to seal the eight-point victory.
RPI held the Saints to just 4.5 percent shooting from three (1-for-22) and limited the host to 37.3 percent overall.
The victory gives the Engineers the top seed, a first round bye, and home court advantage in the Liberty League championship tournament.
RPI will wrap the regular season tomorrow at 4:00 pm at Clarkson.
