NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's ice hockey team erupted for three second-period goals and received a four-point night from defenseman
Thomas Klassek to earn a 4–2 ECAC Hockey victory over Yale in the regular season finale tonight.
After a scoreless opening period that featured steady goaltending from
Nate Krawchuk, the Engineers seized control early in the second. Just 70 seconds into the frame,
Luciano Wilson opened the scoring, finishing an even-strength rush off assists from
Dovar Tinling and Klassek to give RPI a 1–0 lead.
RPI doubled its advantage at 8:11 when Klassek jumped into the play and one-timed home his third goal of the season, converting feeds from
Matthew Buckley and
Ian Scherzer. The Engineers continued to press, and with more than a minute left in the peiord,
Tyler Wallaceextended the lead to 3–0 with the eventual game-winning goal, finishing a strong sequence set up by Klassek and
Jagger Tapper.
Yale cut into the margin midway through the third period, but RPI answered with authority. At 17:22, Wilson struck again for his second of the night, his eighth of the season, finishing a crisp passing play from Klassek and
Rainers Rullers to restore a three-goal cushion at 4–1. The Bulldogs added a late extra-attacker tally, but the Engineers closed out the win.
Klassek totaled one goal and three assists, factoring into all four RPI goals for a career-best performance. Wilson added two goals on three shots, while Wallace finished with a goal and a team-high five shots on goal. Krawchuk was sharp throughout, stopping 23 of 25 shots to earn the victory.
The Engineers will begin preparations for the single game, opening round of the ECAC playoffs, where RPI will travel to Clarkson for a 5:00 pm tilt on Friday.
