TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) has announced a change in leadership of its women's basketball program, effective immediately.
John Greene will not return as head coach.
"Coach Greene has been an important part of our program for the past 25 years, and we are deeply appreciative of the impact he has made on countless student-athletes and our campus community. After careful consideration, we have decided to move in a new direction with our program. We thank Coach Greene for his long-standing commitment and wish him nothing but success in the future," said RPI Director of Athletics,

Greene concluded a distinguished tenure spanning 25 years at RPI, leading the Engineers for 24 seasons and compiling 322 victories. Under his guidance, RPI produced 20 seasons with 10 or more wins.
"For the past 25 Seasons it has been my honor to serve as the Head Coach of this prestigious program and to serve the extraordinary Women of this basketball family. During my tenure I have been blessed to be a part of this landmark team and to work with and share in the lives of its exceptional student athletes, alumni, families and friends and to see the student athletes bring their dreams to reality," said Greene.
"I am grateful to have had the opportunity to witness and be a part of the incredible accomplishments of the student athletes and the Alumnae in their communities, their career fields, in the classroom, and on the court. As I depart, I wish to express my appreciation and respect to the exceptional student athletes, alumni, families, assistant coaches, faculty, staff and friends, and fans I have worked with and have been blessed to know and serve. I am grateful for the support you gave me over these 25 Seasons and for the trust you placed in me to lead RPI Women's Basketball, I always will remember and appreciate the faith you had in my ability to help lead the Program to success and to assist the student athletes to take their goals and aspirations from dreams to reality."
During his time in Troy, Greene coached four Liberty League Players of the Year, three Liberty League Rookies of the Year, two Liberty League Defensive Players of the Year, and a host of All-League Selections and All Academic Selections, ECAC Team Selections, CSC (formerly Cosida) Academic All-District selections, Henry Kumpf and Perseverance Award recipients, multiple RPI Athletics Department Freshmen Athletes of the Year, Female Athletes or the Year, and a Livingston Houston 1st Citizen of the Institute. He is the only Coach in Program history to have coached a New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Women of the Year, two NCAA Women of the Year finalist, an Academic All-America and three NCAA All-Americas.
One of the signature achievements of Greene's came during the 2009–10 season, when he led the Engineers to a Liberty League Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth.
A national search for the next head coach of RPI women's basketball is underway.
