Engineers Pocket First Liberty League Win at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team opened Liberty League play with a 9-5 victory at Vassar this afternoon at Prentiss Field.

RPI overcame an early 2-0 deficit and took its first lead in the third inning. After Michael Lebenson reached, Alex Coombes launched a two-run home run to left-center to even the score at 2-2 and swing momentum to the Engineers.

The Engineers pushed in front in the fifth as Coombes struck again, blasting a solo shot to center for his second homer of the day and a 3-2 advantage.

In the sixth, Walker Abdallah reached on a walk, advanced on a wild pitch, then stole third and scored on a throwing error to make it 4-2.

Vassar trimmed the margin in the bottom of the sixth, but RPI immediately answered in the seventh. Charlie Morse singled, moved up on a wild pitch, and then executed a double steal sequence with Andrew Crux that resulted in Crux stealing home to extend the lead to 5-3.

RPI added two more critical runs in the eighth. Lebenson doubled down the left-field line and later scored on Ben Belliss' sacrifice fly, and Morse followed with an RBI triple to right to bring home Coombes and make it 7-3.

The Engineers tacked on insurance in the ninth when Jack Mullins doubled and scored on Abdallah's sacrifice fly, and another run came home shortly after when Lebenson stole the plate during a double-steal situation to push the advantage to 9-3. Vassar made a late push with two in the bottom of the ninth, but Sam Kuss closed the door to secure the 9-5 final.

Coombes powered the RPI offense, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI on the two home runs. Lebenson was a constant presence on the bases, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two doubles, and two walks. Belliss added two hits and an RBI, while Morse went 2-for-2 and delivered a triple and RBI while also scoring and swiping two bags.

Garret Gates earned the win, allowing two earned runs over 5.1 innings before the bullpen trio of Andrew Gaughan, Sam Ferrier, and Kuss navigated the final frames to finish off the Liberty League-opening road win.

The Engineers welcome Vassar to Robison Field for a doubleheader tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12:00 pm.
