TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team fell, 13-7, to Union this afternoon at ECAV Stadium.
Tyler Ruffini paced the Engineers with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists, while
Andrew Childs scored twice.
Easton Morse added a goal and an assist, and
Cooper Manzi and
Sean Smith also found the back of the net.
Jake Lunati made 14 saves in goal for RPI.
Union jumped in front early with goals at 5:22 and 3:03 of the opening quarter, but RPI answered when Ruffini finished a
Jackson Massaroni feed with two minutes left in the quarter to make it 2-1. The Dutchmen responded again late to take a 3-1 edge after 15 minutes.
RPI's best stretch came in the second quarter as the Engineers battled all the way back to even the game at halftime. Childs scored unassisted at 13:23 to cut the deficit to one, before Ruffini set up Morse at 8:12 to tie it 3-3. Ruffini then found Childs again 40 seconds later to give RPI its first lead at 4-3, and after Union answered to make it 4-4, Smith finished a
Bryce Allen assist at 3:42 to put the Engineers back in front. Union scored late to tie it 5-5 heading into the break.
The Engineers struck first out of halftime when Manzi scored unassisted at 38 ticks into the half for a 6-5 advantage, but Union seized control with a decisive run. The visitors scored five straight goals over the middle of the third quarter to turn the one-goal deficit into a 10-6 lead entering the fourth.
Union extended the margin early in the final period before Ruffini capped RPI's scoring at 11:29, taking an
Easton Morse assist to make it 11-7. Union closed the game with two more goals to secure the 13-7 final.
The Engineers will next host Vassar at 5:00 pm on Wednesday.
