GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team earned its first win of the 2026 season this afternoon, holding off Guilford for a 6-4 victory.
The Engineers opened the scoring in the second when
Danny Nayvelt worked a walk and later came around to score to make it 1-0, but Guilford answered with two in the bottom half on a two-run double.
RPI seized control with a four-run fourth inning, sparked by
Alex Coombes' single and stolen base before he scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Nayvelt followed with a single and also crossed the plate,
Connor Dynan lifted a sacrifice fly to put the Engineers ahead, and
Jack Mullins capped the frame with a two-run homer to left to push the advantage to 5-2.
Guilford chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth to cut the margin to one, but RPI responded again in the sixth as Nayvelt ripped a double and
Charlie Lapp delivered an RBI single down the third-base line to restore breathing room at 6-4.
The Engineers then made the lead stand with scoreless eighth and ninth innings, with
Zac Zajac closing the door to secure his first save of the season.
Lapp led the RPI offense with a 3-for-3 day, adding a walk and the go-ahead insurance RBI, while Nayvelt finished 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, and three runs scored. Dynan went 2-for-2 with an RBI and the sacrifice fly, and Mullins supplied the biggest swing of the day with his first homer of the year.
On the mound,
Andrew Gaughan earned the win in relief, striking out four over two innings, and the bullpen combined to keep Guilford off the board over the final three frames to lock up the win.
RPI next heads to Misenheimer, NC for a three-game series across Thursday and Friday at Pfeiffer University.
