#18 RPI Jumps on MIT in Home Win

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team claimed a 17-10 victory over MIT this afternoon at ECAV Stadium.

Cooper Manzi powered the Engineers with a game-high six goals, while Andrew Childs posted five points on three goals and two assists and Easton Morse matched the five-point mark with one goal and a team-high four assists.

Tyler Ruffini added three points (one goal, two assists), and Hunter Sullivan anchored the defensive effort with 15 saves in the win.

RPI answered an early MIT goal with a blistering first-quarter run, scoring seven times in the opening 14 minutes to seize control. After the Engineers tied it at 1-1 on a Morse finish from Ruffini at 12:16, RPI scored six of the next seven, highlighted by goals 58 seconds apart from Ryan Sweet and Sean Smith in the final minute to take a 7-2 lead after 15 minutes.

The Engineers kept momentum in the second, with Manzi striking three more times to stretch the lead to 10-3 before MIT converted a man-up goal late in the quarter to make it 10-4 at halftime.

RPI's offense stayed sharp out of the break. Childs opened the third-quarter scoring off a Morse assist, and after MIT briefly cut into the margin, Troy Schipf answered with an unassisted goal at 8:00 to keep the Engineers firmly in front. Manzi added another late in the period, and Ruffini capped the quarter's scoring surge with a goal off a Childs feed with 80 seconds left in the frame as RPI carried a 16-7 advantage into the fourth.

Childs scored just over a minute into the final quarter to make it 17-7, and RPI closed out the result while MIT added three late goals.

The Engineers will take the next 11 days off before hosting Williams on Wednesday, March 18.
