Engineers Start Big Three-Game Series at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team began a three-game Liberty League weekend series at Clarkson today with a 7-3 setback before falling 4-3 in 11 innings at Jack Phillips Field.

RPI struck first in the opener, as Andrew Crux singled and Ben Belliss ripped an RBI double to drive him home for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  The Engineers manufactured another run in the fifth to regain the advantage after Clarkson tied it in the third. Charlie Morse walked, moved up on Jack Mullins' sacrifice bunt, and scored when Walker Abdallah lined an RBI single through the left side to put RPI back on top, 2-1.

Clarkson answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to swing momentum for good, using four hits in the frame to take a 4-2 lead.  The Golden Knights added single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to build separation, while RPI's final push came in the eighth when Crux singled and stole second before Belliss delivered another run-scoring double to make it 6-3.

Crux went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Belliss drove in two on a pair of doubles.

Game two started as a pitchers' duel that remained scoreless through three innings before RPI broke through with a two-run fourth. Abdallah singled to start the frame and later scored on Belliss' sacrifice fly, and Michael Lebenson came home moments later on a wild pitch to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead.  RPI added an important run in the sixth as Lebenson doubled, stole third, and scored on Belliss' RBI single to push the advantage to 3-0.

Clarkson finally broke through in the seventh, taking advantage of a throwing error and a pair of wild pitches before a two-out home run tied the game at 3-3.  The game stayed deadlocked through the 10th, and after RPI put two aboard in the 11th, Clarkson walked it off in the bottom half with an RBI single to left.

Abdallah set the tone at the top of the order in the nightcap, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Lebenson finished 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Belliss drove in all three RPI runs via the sacrifice fly and RBI single.

Liam Riordan worked 6.2 innings and allowing three runs (all unearned) with six strikeouts, and Sam Ferrier followed with 2.0 scoreless innings to keep things close in game two.

Game three of the series is scheduled tomorrow at 12:00 pm.
