Engineers Suffer First League Blemishes at Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team dropped a Liberty League doubleheader at Ithaca this afternoon at Kostrinsky Field, falling 5-1 in game one before a late comeback bid came up short in a 5-4 setback in the finale.

Ithaca struck early and used a pair of extra-base hits to build a cushion before RPI got on the board in the seventh of the opener. The Bombers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Cate Murray ripped a two-run triple to center to make it 2-0. Ithaca added two more in the third on Kailen Winkelblech's two-run homer to left, pushing the lead to 4-0.

RPI threatened in the second as Maddy Brooks reached on an error and moved into scoring position, but Ithaca worked out of the inning. The Engineers were limited to two hits on the day, one by Brooks and another by Addison Shaffer

Ithaca tacked on an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, extending the margin to 5-0. RPI avoided the shutout in the top of the seventh. Callista Adorno worked a walk, Olivia Termi was hit by a pitch, and Brooks singled to load the bases before Shaffer lined an RBI single to left to bring home Adorno.

Game two saw RPI build a 4-0 lead behind a three-run second inning and an RBI double from Sydney Speanburg two innings later, but Ithaca answered with a three-run fourth and a two-run sixth to pull out the win.

Olivia Termi doubled to start the second inning rally and later scored on a wild pitch. Lauren Cosselman drew a walk and came home on Gaby Heim's RBI single, and Speanburg was hit by a pitch before Evann McDowell lined an RBI single through the left side to make it 3-0.

RPI added to the lead in the fourth when Heim walked and Speanburg drove an RBI double to right-center to extend the margin to 4-0.

Ithaca responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Bombers then pulled ahead in the sixth, using a two-run double to take a 5-4 lead.

RPI mounted a late push in the seventh as Adorno walked and Termi singled before Shaffer singled to load the bases, but Ithaca turned a force play at second to end the threat.

McDowell went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Termi finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

The Engineers next head to Williams for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
