Baseball Returns to League Play with 7-Inning Win Over Bard

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team opened its Liberty League weekend with an 11-1 victory over Bard this afternoon at Robison Baseball Field, scoring in five different innings and getting a steady start from Garret Gates

RPI's first rally came with a three-run second inning. Connor Dynan was hit by a pitch and advanced to third when Matt Chotiner reached on a fielder's choice and an error. Stephen Koval then ripped a two-run double to right-center, and Walker Abdallah followed with a triple to center that plated Koval to make it 3-0.

Bard got on the board in the third with an unearned run, but the Engineers answered immediately. Danny Nayvelt was hit by a pitch, and after Michael Lebenson singled and stole second, Connor Dynan delivered a two-run single through the right side to bring home both Nayvelt and Lebenson and push the lead to 5-1.

RPI added another in the fourth as Abdallah doubled and eventually scored during a sequence that included a throwing error, extending the advantage to 6-1. The Engineers then blew it open in the fifth. Jorge Hitlin singled and Koval worked a walk before Abdallah singled to load the bases, and three runs came home on a right-field error on Nayvelt's ball in play, making it 9-1.

RPI closed out the scoring with two more in the seventh. Koval singled and Nayvelt drew a walk to set the table, and after a bases-loaded free pass to Charlie Morse brought in a run, Lebenson lined an RBI single to right to make it 11-1.

Abdallah powered the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 day that included a double, triple, three runs scored, and an RBI. Koval also reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, two runs, and a pair of walks, while Lebenson finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Dynan drove in two with the third-inning single.

On the mound, Gates earned the win by working 6.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run on two hits while striking out four. Sam Ferrier closed it out with a scoreless seventh, striking out two.

The Engineers and the Raptors will continue their three-game series with a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Bard.
