SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team stayed hot in Liberty League play on Thursday afternoon, earning a 7-4 win at Union at Central Park.
Garret Gates picked up the win on the mound and
Zac Zajac recorded the save as the Engineers improved to 16-6 overall.
RPI jumped on the board immediately in the top of the first.
Andrew Crux sparked the inning with a triple to right and came home on
Michael Lebenson's RBI double to left. One batter later,
Ben Belliss launched a two-run homer to left to give the Engineers a quick 3-0 lead.
Union chipped away with a solo homer in the second, then used a pair of run-scoring hits in the third to pull even at 3-3. RPI answered right back in the fourth, manufacturing three runs to regain control.
Robbie Reddington drew a walk and
Walker Abdallah was hit by a pitch to set the table, and after both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Lebenson lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Reddington for the go-ahead run. Belliss followed with a clutch single that turned into two RBI when a fielding error in center allowed both Abdallah and Crux to score, pushing the advantage to 6-3.
The Engineers added an important insurance run in the fifth in a heads-up, aggressive sequence.
Charlie Morse singled and later advanced to third on a failed pickoff throwing error, and with Reddington drawing another walk, Morse stole home to make it 7-3.
Union made it interesting in the eighth, taking advantage of traffic and a defensive miscue to score an unearned run and cut the margin to 7-4, but Zajac slammed the door to finish off the win.
Belliss powered the offense, finishing 2-for-5 with four RBI thanks to the early two-run homer and the two-run single in the fourth. Crux had a huge table-setting day, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored, and a walk, while Lebenson added a double, two RBI, and also scored. Morse went 2-for-3 with a run and the key stolen-home insurance tally, and Reddington reached base three times with a hit and two walks while scoring once.
Gates worked 6.0 innings and struck out six to earn the win.
Sam Ferrier delivered a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts,
Andrew Gaughan navigated trouble in the eighth, and Zajac closed out the final four outs for his fourth save of the season.
RPI comes home to host the Garnet Chargers in a doubleheader at Robison Field.
