TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team rolled past Vassar, 15-4, in a Liberty League matchup this afternoon in ECAV Stadium.
RPI's attack was fueled by a game-high six-point outing from
Beckett Houston, who finished with five goals and one assist, while
Camille Stackhouse and
Abigail Couzens each added three goals as the Engineers improved to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Audrey Silverman paced the playmaking with two assists, and RPI also received goals from
Quinn Wollard,
Emily Speck,
Adelaide Hughes, and
Sophia Bunyasaranand. In goal,
Halley Feaga earned the win with seven saves.
The Engineers jumped in front immediately and used a four-goal first quarter to seize control. Couzens opened the scoring on the man advantage, Stackhouse followed with an unassisted finish, and Houston made it 3-0 midway through the frame off an
Ava Gilardone feed. Stackhouse then buried her second with just over three minutes left in the quarter to push the margin to 4-0. Vassar got on the board late in the period, but RPI carried a 4-1 advantage into the second.
RPI kept the pressure on early in the second, as Wollard found the net just 17 seconds into the frame off a Silverman assist, and Houston followed moments later with another man-up tally, again set up by Silverman, to extend the lead to 6-1. Vassar answered with a pair in the final minute before halftime to trim the margin to 6-3 at the break, but the Engineers' defensive work and control of possession kept momentum on their side heading into the third.
The Engineers put the game away with a decisive third-quarter surge, scoring five unanswered to open an 11-3 lead. Couzens struck twice early in the period, including a free-position goal, before Houston took over with three straight goals to break the game open.
Vassar's lone goal of the fourth came about five minutes into the final period (a man-down tally), but RPI responded with four more to close out the afternoon. Speck converted a man-up goal off a Stackhouse assist, Bunyasaranand scored unassisted with a little more than eight minutes left, Hughes buried a free-position chance in the final three minutes, and Stackhouse punctuated the win with her third goal in the closing seconds.
RPI held advantages in shots (35-24), shots on goal (26-11), draw controls (13-6), and ground balls (19-17), while cashing in three times on extra-player opportunities. Gilardone anchored the hustle plays with six draw controls and four caused turnovers.
The Engineers turn around to host Bard tomorrow in a 3:00 pm senior day contest in ECAV.
