CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team split a non-league doubleheader at Cortland this afternoon at Dragon Field, dropping a 1-0 decision before answering with a 1-0 win in eight innings.
Cortland pushed across the only run of game one in the bottom of the third and made it stand.
RPI threatened early in the top of the first when
Evann McDowell reached on an error and
Olivia Termi followed with a single through the left side, but Cortland escaped the inning unscathed.
The Engineers' best chance came an inning later as
Maddy Brooks doubled to left and stole third with one out, but Cortland's defense kept the run off the board.
Cortland broke through in the third when Sam Pusloskie singled and later scored on Shelby LaMont's RBI single to center to take a 1-0 lead.
RPI continued to battle late, highlighted by
Gaby Heim's two-out double in the seventh, but Cortland held on to complete the shutout.
Brooks and Heim each doubled, while Termi and
Callista Adorno added singles for RPI's four hits. In the circle,
Callie Volker struck out two over 4.0 innings and
Maggie Kreis followed with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief as the Engineers kept it within a run throughout.
RPI responded with a shutout of its own in the nightcap, breaking through in the top of the eighth and getting a complete-game gem from
Ava Markert.
Neither team scored through seven in another well-played pitching duel.
Callista Adorno set the tone offensively by going a perfect 3-for-3, and RPI consistently put pressure on the bases with three hit batters and three stolen bases.
In the top of the eighth, pinch runner
Kylie Grabler (who began the inning as the extra runner placed second base) moved to third on
Addison Shaffer's sacrifice bunt. After
Maddy Brooks drew a walk and stole second,
Lauren Cosselman dropped a perfectly placed bunt single back to the pitcher to bring home Grabler for the game's only run.
Markert made the lead hold, retiring Cortland in order in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 1-0 victory. She went the distance, scattering six hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 8.0 shutout innings.
RPI returns to league play this Friday with a doubleheader at Union. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
