BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The RPI football team was defeated by SUNY Brockport, 45-10, this afternoon at Bob Boozer Field. The Engineers scored 10 points in the opening quarter and trailed by four late in the period before Brockport pulled away to hand RPI its second straight setback.
Brockport struck on the game's opening play from scrimmage when Zymier Jackson connected with Kyle Slywka for a 75-yard touchdown, but RPI responded immediately.
Kayden White broke a 30-yard run to move the Engineers into Brockport territory before
Frankie Garbolino found
Nate Ehui for a 36-yard touchdown to complete a four-play, 75-yard drive and even the score at 7-7.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead less than a minute later following a 70-yard run by Derrion Battle that set up a two-yard Anthony Vino touchdown. RPI answered with another extended drive later in the opening quarter, moving 77 yards in 12 plays. Garbolino connected with
Grayson Hunter for 26 yards to set the Engineers up at the Brockport three-yard line before
Kevin Lukash converted a 20-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 14-10.
Brockport extended its advantage early in the second quarter when Vino broke a 60-yard run on fourth down before scoring from six yards out on the following play. The RPI defense later came up with a fourth-down stop in its own territory, but the Golden Eagles added another score late in the half on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Battle to take a 28-10 lead into the break.
The Engineers produced another defensive stop early in the third quarter when
Luke Lavello intercepted Jackson in the end zone for a touchback. Brockport regained possession two plays later following an RPI fumble and capitalized on the short field with a one-yard touchdown run by Battle. The Golden Eagles added a 34-yard field goal later in the period to extend their advantage to 38-10.
Brockport completed the scoring in the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 19-yard Allan Paul touchdown run.
White led the RPI ground attack with 61 yards on 11 carries, including a 30-yard run, while
Adrien Gurung added 16 yards on four attempts. Garbolino completed six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. Hunter led the Engineers with four receptions for 61 yards, while Ehui's lone reception went for the 36-yard first-quarter touchdown.
West Dews totaled 112 yards on four kickoff returns, including a 41-yard return in the fourth quarter.
Defensively,
P.J. Poknis paced RPI with nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
RJ White,
Matt Krauza, and
Lance Hersh recorded six tackles apiece, with Krauza adding a tackle for a seven-yard loss. Hersh forced a fourth-quarter fumble that
Aidan Wilmot recovered, while Lavello registered RPI's interception. The Engineers finished with four tackles for loss and forced two Brockport turnovers.
