  1. What are Intramurals?

Intramural Sports are different in nature than Intercollegiate Sports. Intercollegiate sports provide an opportunity for athletes to compete at the NCAA level, sometimes on athletic scholarship, against teams from other universities. Intramural Sports are organized recreational sports leagues that allow students at RPI to participate in a variety of team, dual, and individual sports against other RPI students. Competition exists, but the real focus of intramural sports is health and exercise, social interaction, stress reduction, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

  2. Can I play on more than one team in a sport?

Intramural participants can only play on one team per sport, including sports that have co-ed divisions.

  3. Who can play Intramurals at RPI?

All currently enrolled, fee-paying students are eligible to participate. Additionally, full-time faculty and staff members of RPI with their Rensselaer Ids can play too. Alumni of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are eligible if they join the “Let’s Go Red” booster club.

However, some restrictions still apply to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute faculty, staff, alumni and its varsity athletes.

  4. Do I need an entry form?

Yes, you will need to submit a “Roster.” Roster forms are available in three spots for your convenience. You can get one online off the Intramural website, in the Mueller Center or ’87 Gym. TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE SPORT, THE ROSTER FORM MUST BE PRINTED NEATLY IN PEN AND BE FULLY COMPLETED WITH EVERY PARTICIPANT'S NAME, EMAIL, PHONE AND RIN NUMBER.

  5. When and how do I sign-up?

You sign-up on the specific date listed for that sport in the Mueller Center. Rosters are only accepted on the specific due date and all fees must be paid at the time you sign-up.

  6. How much is this going to cost me?

There are low-cost team entry fees to play particular sports. So the cost is generally very cheap when it is divided among all the members of the team.

  7. So there is no specific skill required?

Definitely not. RPI’s IM program is designed for all skill levels. We have 4 league levels for you to choose from; A, B, C, & D. “A” is for the highly skilled competitive player and “D” is for the less-skilled out-for-a-good-time type of player.

  8. Why should I become a captain?

Intramural captains are the teams representative, and serves as a liaison between Intramural Sports and its participants. A captain's responsibilities are varied, from signing the team up, to making sure everyone arrives at the game on time, to ensuring a team has appropriate conduct during a game. You can sharpen your leadership skills by becoming a team captain.

  9. OK, I’m a Captain and I signed my team up, why do I have to go to the captain's meeting?

Why do you have to go to class? Because you can’t REALLY learn if you don’t. Same goes for the captain's meeting. We expect that each and every one of our captains to be well versed in the guidelines established in our captain's guide. We find that the most informed captains are the ones whose teams never have a forfeit, never have an ejection, and have the best time. If you can’t make a meeting for some reason, you need to have a teammate represent you at it. Because of our sign-up procedure, we must confirm entries into our leagues in person, at the captain's meeting. The way captain's meetings work is that we go over the rules and general regulations of each sport and answer any questions you might have.

  10. How do I get involved, I don’t really know anyone?

Here's what’s great about Intramurals. The people you meet. Hey, if you're like me and don’t have any friends who like to play soccer, it's ok. All you have to do is fill out the Free Agent form for that sport and we'll do our best to put you on a team. But that’s only one of many ways to join a team. Thinking of rushing a fraternity or sorority? Well just about every fraternity and sorority at RPI fields a team, sometimes for every intramural sport. Live on campus? Talk to your RA about signing up your floor for a sport. Many RA's advertise intramural sign up deadlines and organize teams. Then there's the old fashioned way of rounding up a handful of your buddies and taking the initiative as the captain to register the team to play. It's that simple.

  11. What do we get if we win the championship?

We are currently in negotiations with Wheaties to get IM Champions placed on the side of the "Breakfast of Champions" box. If this fails, we'll still give you an Intramural Championship T-Shirt or other consolation prize.

  12. I need a job, is IM Sports hiring?

Yes. At various times throughout the year, Intramural Sports hires officials to referee its soccer, basketball and ice hockey sports. Pay rates begin at $7.00 a game (hour). It's a biased opinion, but Intramural Officiating is the best way to get involved on campus. You'll no longer be just another student when you walk across campus, but you'll be that girl that reffed my game the other day.

Intramural officiating gives students a chance to learn a skill, develop leadership and communication skills, and above all help make the IM Sports program as good as it can be because its YOUR program.

  13. Do we have to buy uniforms?

No, you don’t have to. We do encourage you to be creative though, and make/buy your own uniforms. It helps our leagues look more professional when our teams are outfitted well. But, we mostly just require the home team to wear dark colors.

  14. I can’t think of a team name, any advice?

Be creative, yet polite. We reserve the right to change any team name, if we feel the need.

  15. Do I have to bring my STUDENT ID with me when I play?

Yes, with no exceptions. Your class schedule, driver’s license, or birth certificate will not suffice. Intramural Supervisors will not budge on this one, so please don’t ask them to.

  16. Who are Intramural Supervisors?

Who are Intramural Supervisors you ask? They are the students who administer our Intramural Program. IM Supervisors are mainly there to supervise to ensure a safe and smooth operation of the facility and programs. They have managerial responsibility and authority for the IM sports programs during the evening, night and weekend hours. Additionally, all IM employees are charged with the responsibility of providing a safe, enjoyable, service-oriented environment for all participants at all times.
