He had 19 years of coaching experience, including seven collegiately and 12 on the high school level, before arriving at Rensselaer.

He came to RPI from Bates College, where he was the offensive coordinator for four years, as well as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Since 2007, when he joined the Bobcats, he coached numerous All-NESCAC (New England Small School Athletic Conference) student-athletes at a variety of positions, including tight end, offensive line, wide receiver and quarterback - the first signal caller in school history to be recognized. The team set 11 school records on offense in 2011, led the league in numerous offensive categories in 2012 and led the NCAA Division III in turnover margin two years ago while setting the program record for rushing yards in a season.

Prior to coaching at Bates, where he also ran numerous camps, Weiss was head football coach at Westbrook High School in Maine in 2007, following a six-year stint as head football coach at Rockland High School. He was also the director of athletics/activities at Rockland for one year. Weiss began coaching high school football in his native New Jersey, where he was on the staffs at Montclair Immaculate Conception, Pope John 23rd and James Caldwell High School. He also coached track & field at Caldwell, as well as at Rockland. Additionally, he has experience coaching high school wrestling and as a strength & conditioning coach.

Weiss graduated from New Jersey City University with a degree in special education and served as a special education teacher from 1999 to 2008. He was a professional actor for five years, and trained at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute in New York City as well as at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, where he was a theater major.
