McDowell joined the collegiate coaching ranks in 2013 as the assistant offensive line coach at RPI. He held the same position in 2014, helping guide a team that averaged 378.5 yards and 28.2 points. The Engineers ran for 368 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Merchant Marine and had two All-Liberty League offensive linemen in Steve Mills and Jay Yaskanich.

A 2012 graduate of Ferrum College in Virginia, McDowell was a four-year member of the Division III Panthers, where he was a two-time member of the USA South All-Conference First Team, and also earned All-Region Second Team honors from D3football.com in 2010 and 2011. He was named to the Roanoke Times All-State First Team and the VaSID All-State First Team in 2011, and earned back-to-back USA South Conference All-Academic Team honors twice. 

McDowell served as a volunteer assistant offensive line coach at Bishop McNamara High School the fall prior to coming to Troy.
