Matthew McFarland joined the RPI coaching staff prior to the 2022 season. A native of Bowie, Md., McFarland was the was the defensive line coach at his alma mater, Salisbury University, for two seasons before coming to Troy. With the Sea Gulls, he was responsible for creating daily practice plans, regarding drills, techniques and blitz packages to prepare linemen for games. He helped two student-athletes earn all-conference recognition on the defensive line.
McFarland was a four-year member of the Salisbury football team and team captain. A starter for three seasons, the former Eleanor Roosevelt High School standout was an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) defensive lineman in both his junior and senior seasons. He helped lead the Sea Gulls to the Elite 8 of the Division III NCAA Tournament in 2019 and finished his career 10th on the Salisbury all-time sack list.
Earning his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in 2020, he completed his Master's in Health & Human Performance from Salisbury in 2022.
