A native of Ballston Lake, N.Y., Turnbull joined the Rensselaer football staff in August 2014.
In his first season with the Engineers, he saw the team intercept 19 passes with 209 return yards in 2014. RPI also had 42 pass breakups and two All-Liberty League defensive backs (Nick Borkowski & Philip Lanieri III).
In 2015, the special teams unit lef the Liberty League in kickoff coverage and punt coverage, while the defense finished 13th in the nation in passing yard defense and 16th in passing defense efficiency. Individually, defensive back Philip Lanieri III earned AFCA National All-America and AP Little All-America honors, while Teague Florio was a CoSIDA National Academic All-America.
He came to Troy with experience as an educator, having been a physical education teacher in the Mohonasen Central and Greenwich Central school districts. He has also taught at the middle school and elementary school levels as a student and substitute teacher, respectively.
His coaching experience covers youth, high school and collegiate programs. Immediately prior to joining Coach Isernia's staff at RPI, Turnbull as the defensive coordinator at Hudson Valley Community College. He worked directly with the cornerbacks and safeties, while also coordinating punt team coverage. He handled film breakdown, scouting and recruiting for the Vikings. He came out of the high school ranks, where he coached football, basketball and baseball at both Greenwich and Mohonasen.
Turnbull earned a Bachelor of Science in Movement and Sports Studies with a minor in health studies from Springfield College in Mass., in 2006. He also has a master's degree from the United States Sports Academy in sports coaching and administration.
