Halayko was a three-sport standout at Watervliet High School.  He was an All-City Honorable Mention center and defensive end while playing for current RPI head coach Joe King.

Halayko went on to the Albany College of Pharmacy, where he was a two-time All-Conference selection in basketball.

Halayko, who spent five years as an assistant football coach at Watervliet High before originally joining the Engineers, is a pharmacist at Albany Medical Center.

Halayko and his wife, Cathy, reside in Niskayuna.  They have two children, Dan, a lacrosse student-athlete at the University of Maryland, and Beth, who attends Cornell University, where she plays on the lacrosse team.
