Hummel begins his second season at RPI after a 22-year career as a coach at the high school varsity boys' level.

The Long Island, N.Y., native helped the Engineers post a 17-8 overall record and an 11-3 mark in the Liberty League in 2010-11.  The squad won each of their last seven games to become co-regular season champions after being picked to finish sixth in the preseason polls.  RPI was recognized with year-end honors, including Coaching Staff of the Year recognition for head coach Mike Griffin, Hummel and former assistants Paul Halas and Jeff Hiser.

Boasting an impressive resume of schools, Hummel coached at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY, from 1982-84 before moving on to Rumson Fairhaven High School in Rumson, NJ, from 1985-87.  In 1987, Hummel began his first stint at Queensbury High School, guiding the Spartans until the 1998 season.  He then returned in 2001 till 2008.

His Spartans' teams compiled 213 wins with two league championships (1998 & 2008), along with two trips to the Section II Final Four (semifinalists in 2004 & finalist in 1993). Many of his former players, including current Baltimore Orioles infielder Brendan Harris, have been recognized as league All-Star's, MVP's and Section II Scholar-Athletes.  In 2008, Hummel was recognized as the Glens Falls Post Star "Coach of the Year".

Hummel was a varsity basketball starter for three years (1973-76)at Sachem High School in Lake Ronokonkoma, NY.  He was a League I All-Star and team captain and led his team to the school's first League I Championship.

He then moved on to Colgate University and played varsity basketball from 1976-80 under current RPI head coach Mike Griffin.  Hummel served as a co-captain for the Raiders during his senior year.

Hummel earned his Bachelor of Arts in history with a minor in education in 1980 from Colgate.  He remained at the school, earning his MAT in social studies in 1984.  He has been a secondary level social studies teacher since 1981.  Among the other positions Hummel has served, include Assistant Principal at Queensbury Middle School from 1998 till 2001.

Hummel currently coaches modified football at Queensbury Middle School, overseas several youth basketball and football programs for the city's Department of Parks and Recreation and also directs several summer basketball camps and leagues.

Hummel serves on the NYSPHSAA Boys Basketball Committee and the NYSPHSAA Modified Athletics Committee.  He is a former president of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY).

Hummel is married to the former Susan Mauhs, who is a 1981 Colgate graduate and a current Queensbury middle school mathematics teacher.  They have three children - Chris (Colgate '09), Jeff (Hobart '12) and Deb (St. Lawrence '13).
