Maguire Sweeney

Maguire Sweeney

A native of Summit, N.J, Maguire Sweeney was hired by Rensselaer ahead of the 2023-24 season.
 
During the Sweeney’s two seasons with the program, the team has had a record of 37-17.  During the 2024-25 season, Rensselaer had a successful campaign, finishing 21-6 overall (14-4 in the Liberty League), including the Liberty League regular season championship and finished the ranked No. 1 in the Region 3 rankings by the NCAA. Out of all Division III programs in the nation, RPI was No. 1 in scoring defense (57.3). As well as, 3 student athletes, Avery Eugster, Dylan Matchett, and Andrew Deppe, being named to the All-Conference selection. 
 
The prior season (23-24), the Engineers had another successful campaign finishing 16-11 overall finishing 3rd in the Liberty League. Jonny Angbazo and Avery Eugster were both named All-Conference selections, and Angbazo was named “Liberty League Player of the Year”. RPI was No. 5 in the country in scoring defense (58.4).

Sweeney’s responsibilities include coordinating the programs recruiting efforts, as well as being the team’s scouting director. In addition, he is heavily involved in on the court player development, operations, and fundraising for the program.

Prior to his arrival in Troy, Sweeney spent one year as assistant coach at Rutgers-Newark, where he was the programs recruiting coordinator, scouting director and academic coordinator.  During his time at Newark, Sweeney coached 2 student-athletes that earned All-Conference and one that was named “Defensive Player of the Year”.

Prior to Rutgers-Newark, Sweeney was a member of Stevens Institute of Technology men’s basketball team from 2017-2022. At Stevens, Sweeney was a part of two conference championship winning teams (2020 & 2022) and was the captain of the 2022 championship team. 

Sweeney earned a bachelor's degree in business management in 2021 and an MBA in project management in 2022, both from Stevens.
