Paul Halas returned to Rensselaer as an assistant coach to the men’s basketball squad in 2008-09.
A native of Sea Girt, N.J., Halas spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program at Drew University. Among his responsibilities were recruiting, game-planning and scouting. The Rangers posted a 7-18 record, including a 4-10 mark in the Landmark Conference, and finished the season ranked 26th-nationally in scoring defense.
In addition to coaching at Drew, Halas also worked for Penton Publishing following graduation.
As a player, Halas appeared in 61 games from 2002-2006 for Rensselaer. He averaged 4.7 points per game and shot 42.7% from three-point range in his career. His best season came in 2005-06 when he averaged 7.0 points per game and ranked among the top-six in the Liberty League in 3-point field goal percentage (44.0%) and 3-point field goals made (44).
A captain in his final season, he was named the school’s Henry Kumpf Award recipient which is given annually to a student-athlete who has demonstrated a strong degree of motivation, desire and determination in contributing to the success of the team.
Prior to attending Rensselaer, Halas was a three-year member of the varsity basketball team at St. Rose High School. He also captained the squad as a senior.
Halas graduated from Rensselaer in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Communications.
