Liam Heffernan, a former professional player and standout at Hartwick College, joined Rensselaer's men's soccer staff in August 2014.
Heffernan played for a number of teams and organizations in his career, including Coventry City Football Club, Rushden & Diamonds and English Schoolboys (U18) National Team, traveling to Wales, Holland, Ireland and Germany.
He went on to play in New York, Michigan, San Francisco and Salt Lake City, followed by an 11-year coaching stint in Park City, Utah. Since 2010, he has been a radio host/FIFA World Cup correspondent, as well as a voice actor for KPCW Park City radio station. On the air, he announced boys and girls Park City High School games.
Heffernan received his Bachelors of Arts in Cultural Anthropology from Hartwick in 1998. With the Hawks, he was a Soccer America Freshman All-America Team selection, helping the club to an NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 1993. After college, he played for Chesham United (English 6th Division), Kettering Town (English 5th Division), San Francisco Bay Seals and Utah Blitzz, while also training with the San Jose Clash of Major League Soccer.
A native of Munster, Germany, he was an assistant coach with the Utah Salt Rats in 2003 and 2004 and privately coached Park City players that have gone on to play at Cal State Fullerton and Iona, while others have gone on to play professionally in Sweden and Italy.
