Marc Cavosie joined the Engineers as a full-time assistant coach in August of 2018 after serving as a volunteer assistant with the women’s program in 2017-18. He was a volunteer coach with the men’s team the three seasons prior.
Following an initial season in which Rensselaer had six wins in ECAC Hockey play, the Cohoes, N.Y., native helped the team to its most conference victories in nearly a decade in 2018-19 (10-11-1). Overall it was 14-18-5 and earned a spot in the league quarterfinals, during which it became the first No. 8 seed to earn an ECAC Hockey playoff game win.
Working closely with the forwards and power play units, he mentored forward Blake Orosz, who established the program's Division I single-season record with 17 goals. On the other end of the ice, goaltender Lovisa Selander capped an illustrious career by setting the NCAA career saves record (4,167) and earning CCM/AHCA All-America First Team recognition.
Cavosie grew up attending Rensselaer games and chose to play for the Engineers, enjoying an exceptional career before departing after three seasons to begin a 12-year professional playing career.
A fourth round draft pick (99th overall) of the Minnesota Wild in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Cavosie made his professional debut with the club’s AHL affiliate in Houston in 2002-03, helping the Aeros to their first Calder Cup Championship. Following a three-year stint in Texas, he signed with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms for the 2005-06 season, playing in 63 games.
Cavosie, a forward, spent a year playing in Sweden for Rögle BK of the SHL before returning to the U.S. in 2009, signing with the Albany River Rats and Binghamton Senators, both of the AHL. He then returned overseas and played two years in Slovenia before finishing his career with three years in the Asia League, suiting up for the Oji Eagles and the Tohoku Free Blades.
In three seasons at Rensselaer, Cavosie scored 48 goals with 61 assists for 109 points in 97 career games. He led the Engineers in scoring during his final campaign, notching 23 goals and 27 assists while helping the team to a 20-13-4 record and a third place finish at the ECAC Hockey Championship in Lake Placid.
Cavosie’s decorated college playing career included All-ECAC Hockey First Team and ECAC Player of the Year. He was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and a First Team All-American in his final year. He also represented the United States at the World Junior Championships in 2000 in Moscow.
A graduate of the Lally School of Management, Cavosie was selected to the RPI Athletics Hall of Fame in the Class of 2020.
