Michael Sorrentino was hired as the men's and women's swimming & diving assistant coach prior to the 2017-18 season and has helped the Engineers continue their success each year since.
The 2019-20 campaign marked the fourth undefeated dual meet season in the past five years for the men's team (8-0; 11-1 with RPI Kumpf Invitational), which went on to capture its fifth consecutive conference championship. The women sent sophomore Megan Beaulieu to the national meet for the second straight year, though the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Â
The women (6-1) and men (7-0) combined for a 13-1 record in 2018-19 with the staff earning the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year for the fourth straight time. The teams combined to go 16-1 (25-1) in 2017-18 with the women setting the school mark with an undefeated, nine-win campaign (14-0). Both squads captured Liberty League Championship Meet victories and the women qualified a school record six swimmers for Nationals, including the first relay in program history.Â
Sorrentino, a native of Glens Falls, N.Y., joined Rensselaer from SUNY Potsdam, where he was an assistant coach for the 2016-17 season. He worked with both the women and the men, while also recruiting for both programs.
He was previously the head coach for the Bethlehem Area YMCA BAY Rays swim team in Delmar, N.Y., for one year (2015-16), planning and implementing workouts - in the pool as well as dry-land training - for athletes of varying ability levels and ages.

From August 2013 through May 2015, Sorrentino was the assistant coach at Bethany College in West Virginia, where he recruited and coached the men's and women's teams, working primarily with individual medley and sprint training groups. He also organized, planned and supervised swimming lessons for students. In two seasons at Bethany, both teams posted dual meet winning records and set 27 individual records.
Â
Sorrentino has also been the aquatic director with the City of Glens Falls Recreation Department (2014, 2016). His first coaching experience came as an assistant for the Cortland Area YMCA Stingers (2012-13).
Â
A four-year member of the SUNY Cortland swimming & diving team, he was a SUNYAC Championships finalist in the 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley and the 200 butterfly.
